My desire for a portable power station was for a backup power solution in the event of emergencies. I wanted a unit that would be able to recharge our devices as well as small appliances for a substantial period without access to home electrical power. Another requirement was the ability to recharge the battery unit from a solar panel in case the power did not come back in a reasonable period of time. After some research, I settled on the Ecoflow brand and the Delta Mini as the model that could suit my basic needs while remaining within my budget.
I initially purchased the Ecoflow Delta Mini listed at $799 with a $50 discount coupon upon checkout. I also purchased an Ecoflow 160 watt solar panel to accompany the battery unit for $349. I was pleased to receive both items within a few days of the order.
Unfortunately, the Delta Mini I received did not work properly. The unit would charge up when plugged in and I could charge devices from it, but the power button (on/off) did not work. After shutting down from inactivity, the unit would only become active again if plugged back into the wall. Not good if you need to use the device but have no access to a working power plug.
I called Ecoflow and after a short evaluation by the operator and an email, they agreed that the unit was defective and arranged for a shipping label for return and eventually replacement. Unfortunately, the process to receive a new unit would take several weeks. To avoid such a long wait, I sent the defective unit back and ordered a second unit from Amazon. The new unit arrived a couple of days later. Not long after, my defective unit got back to the factory and I was issued a full refund. Minor frustration, but the company made it right.
As for the Ecoflow Delta Mini, it works as expected and very well at that. I tested it with the devices that I planned to power it with and found that it charged up multiple devices via the USB outlets at the expected rates. Even fast charging those phones via the one USB that has that capability. The unit also powered small appliances (albeit with significant drain of the battery). I tested a 1500 watt electric kettle with 1.7 liters of water, and was able to get a full boil in 6 minutes with about 16-18% batter drain at each attempt. The same test with 1.7 liters of water on a single burner 1200 watt hot plate took 13 minutes to a full boil and drained 36% of the battery. A test of keeping a 7 cu. foot freezer alive overnight (12 hours) gave me a 60% drain of the battery. All in all, interesting results. It meets my needs, but be aware that if you hope to power more appliances for a longer period of time you will need one of the bigger and more expensive units.
As for recharging, the Delta Mini charged up very quickly from the wall plug. It only takes an hour or so to top up from the 50-60% area to full. When it’s really low (below 30%) you might need up to two hours to get a full charge.
I was impressed with the solar panel. It was listed at 160 watts, and with full sunlight it gave exactly that. As the clouds passed by it dipped a bit (103, 137, etc.) but as long as the sun was strong it was plugging right along. However whenever the clouds blocked the sun, the output dropped all the way down. Sometimes in the 24-77 watt range, but often at zero. Keep that in mind, as the weather of the day will affect how much re-charge you will get. My test day had strong sun, but with periods that the clouds passed over and blocked it completely. All told, in that session it took me 1 hour to gain a 10% charge on the battery. If you are going to rely on the sun to get your battery from 0 to 100, expect it to take all day if it gets there at all. Perhaps a second (expensive) panel might make that more realistic.
Overall, I am very pleased with the purchase as well as the response by customer service to my issues.
The Good:
- This is a nice, compact, well-built unit. It is not very heavy (about 20lbs or so) and is very easy to transport.
- The App works very well when compared to apps for other IOT devices.
- It provides the expected runtime ONLY once the inefficiencies of the inverter are accounted for. While troubleshooting the original unit, EcoFlow indicated the inverter is about 70 percent efficient at the load I was using and that I should not expect it to deliver the full runtime expected from an 882-watt-hour device. When load-testing the replacement unit, it ran for over 70 percent of the calculated time based on the 882-watt-hrs advertised.
The Not-as-Good:
- The unit does not give any audible warning before it shuts down. Once the battery is depleted, it just turns off the AC power outlet with no warning.
- The estimated runtime on the display (and in the app) is not accurate. This may be due to battery variations over time which require calibration. Recalibration requires several cycles of running the unit until shutdown and then recharging to 100%. During testing of both the original and replacement units, they ran at 1% of power (as indicated by the display) far longer than predicted.
- The misleading advertising for the 882-watt-hour rating should be caveated with the disclaimer that the unit will not actually provide that advertised power due to inefficiencies in the unit itself. I suspect that this type of misleading advertising is common for these types of devices, but that does not make it right.
- Since the first unit I received was defective, I worry about the factory QC and long-term durability of these devices. I suspect most people will not load-test the unit as I did and may not know they have a defective device. They may just put it away for an emergency, only to find it does not perform as expected when it is needed.
Disclaimer: EcoFlow did provide a $100 credit for my trouble. The credit was issued before I updated the review to 5-stars. Despite that, I have tried to give an unbiased review, although I suspect I would give it only 4-stars had it not been for that. As I continue to use this unit, I will update this review if anything changes.
My original review from July 18, 2022:
---------------------------------------------
This product advertised as 882 watt-hours should supply 70 watts for around 12 hours. Originally, the app said it would last 7 hours but it started decreasing the time estimate very quickly. The battery was completely drained after less than 2 hours. When I first received it, I let it charge to 100% and then updated the firmware, so it is up to date. Obviously, the batteries in this unit are not as advertised. I will be returning for a refund.

Edit on Feb 18th, 2022: EcoFlow decided to accept the return of this defective unit after this review was posted. I was told "Normally, the replacement would be shipped after the returned parcel is received.
But I have applied for a special solution for you that the replacement unit to be arranged for you as soon as your parcel is shipped out." and I dropped off the replacement to FedEx on Wednesday, Feb 16th. Since then, I have now been told that a unit will be shipped out Friday which came and went, now it's Monday but that's a holiday so they're not sure when one will ship. At this point, they have my $1,200 and the defective unit I originally purchased. They're an absolute nightmare to deal with, spare yourself the headache, look at Jackery or Bluetti.
I did a lot of research before buying this unit. For $1,263 taxes in, you would think this would be a reliable unit considering it costs the same as a small Honda Generator. Sadly, it arrived completely dead. The unit will not power on and will not charge using the supplied 110V cable. I have tried several outlets but all the unit does is clicks when plugged in, doesn't charge and will not turn on. I contacted Amazon to return it and was told they won't take it back since it was sold and shipped by a 3rd party merchant through Amazon. I contacted the merchant and was asked to send a video to prove that I wasn't lying, no troubleshooting was offered. I am very disappointed to have spent close to $1,300 on a paperweight that neither Amazon nor the manufacturer will take responsibility for. Buyer beware, don't make the same mistake I did.
Interesting things happen to your review has been 'liked' by enough people to make it the most read negative review for a product on Amazon. EcoFlow contacted me to ask about my concerns with their product. I told them that I like everything about it, except that it only delivers 2/3 of the power they promise in their advertising. After a lot of back-and-forth so that they could consult with their management (at least 5 calls and 2-months later), they offered me a refund of about 20% of my purchase price as a way of compensating me for my disappointment. I accepted this partial refund with gratitude and respect. That is nice customer service; good on them. I wish all vendors had such a commitment to the satisfaction of their consumers. BUT, in the email notifying me of the partial refund they also asked that I consider upgrading my review to 5 stars (because of their service) or of deleting my review all together. No, Ecoflow - I won't do either of those things. What I will do is change my rating from 2 stars to 3 stars to recognize that part of what we buy when we buy EcoFlow is customer service. I will give you 5-stars when *YOU* change your product branding so that this otherwise fine product is renamed to "615 Wh" and not "882 Wh".
ORIGINAL REVIEW
The device is well built and all the functions seems to operate just fine. However, after receiving it I ran a simply capacity test . I charged it to 100%, then unplugged it from the wall socket. I then connected a few lights for a total of 190W load. I let the machine run on this steady load until the power level reduced from 100% to 1%. That took a total of 3hrs 14minutes. That works out to a capacity of 615Wh which is 30% less than the advertised 882Wh ! This is a brand-new device, tested in a room that was at 18 degrees C (a cool basement) and in a city that is only 77 meters above sea level. So the test environment can't be held to blame.
I didn't expect perfection, but 30% less capacity is a significant deviation from their promised capacity. I am quite disappointed.
Since purchasing the Ecoflow unit, I have upgraded and bought a Bluetti A200MAX to solve the problem of my original review below. I have kept the Ecoflow unit as it is a nice-sized unit.
Since my original review, Ecoflow's customer service team did reach out to me to offer a return or a ~20% refund considering I was not satisfied. I appreciate that their team is reading these reviews and hope that this fuels improvement in their future products.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
PROBLEM: The "Car Power Output" (1 port, 12.6V, 10A, 126W Max) is not powerful enough if you are considering this unit (or any of the Ecoflow Delta units) for a van life power system. This became an issue when we installed a Bison petrol heater and the unit was unable to start the heater.
Ecoflow doesn't advertise these units as being able to run a van system so this was my own fault for not doing enough research, however, alternatives in the same market space are powerful enough - check out Goal Zero and Bluetti units which all have a 25A (or more) 12v output.
Other than this issue, the unit has been great over the summer running low-power 12v loads, which is disappointing that we are limited and that Ecoflow hasn't built a product with a higher 12v output alike the others.
